A radio streaming application is a must have for any android phone. The TuneIn Radio application is one of the best available from the Android Market.

The bottom line of this app is the absolutely phenomenal selection of radio stations from all over the world that you can listen to on your device. The home page gives you the option to browse Local Radio stations. It uses your GPS to determine your location, in my case South Africa, Johannesburg. It found all the main radio stations such as 5FM, SAFM as well as some minor local stations like Voice Of Wits. The application takes a few seconds to open the stream and then buffer, but then the quality of the audio is great. Obviously this varies depending of the quality of the stream put out by each station. Sometimes, some of the more obscure stations that it finds cannot be streamed, but then, the application was clever enough to find a similar station that worked, saving me much frustration.

TuneIn Radio claims to offer over 50 000 radio stations from all over the world. We’ll have to take their word for it. The choice certainly seems overwhelming when I browse. You can select stations by Category, such as Music, and subcategory maybe 30 types of music; or the Category Talk, or Sport. Also, you can select almost any of the languages of the planet. If you find stations that you like, it’s easy to save them to your presets so that you can find them the next time. A fun feature of the application is that you can shake your device and then TuneIn will find you another station of music that you might enjoy.

The TuneIn app plays in the background on your device, so you can continue doing something else. If you’re tired of the station you’re listening to, just shake your device and it will find you something new.

There are also podcasts available for browsing through. TuneIn claims that there are over 1.2 million podcasts available. We’ll have to take their word for it.

The TuneIn Radio PRO version is also available at a price of R7.86. But the blurb didn’t mention any features available in the PRO vision that the FREE version didn’t have. TuneIn Radio encourages you to make donations to your favourite radio stations.
