Commanding the iPad

Commanding the iPad

The idea of playing a hard-core title, all kitted out with its clever strategies and sharp planning is a major selling point for all gamers, especially when it promises a wide screen that renders quick, intuitive touch controls. One such game is Westwood Studios’ Command & Conquer: Red Alert which has been long regarded as a leader in real time strategy gaming, sitting alongside Blizzard, creators of Warcraft and Starcraft or Relic’s Warhammer 40k.
Although the game looks awesome it only gives a hint at what’s possible on the iPad. Using three fingers, you can now select groups of units rather than tapping a button and then drawing a rectangle of your desired forces. You can group your units together into three individual forces, each assigned to a hot key tab.
Red Alert is split into three campaigns: Soviet, Allied, and Rising Sun. That third campaign is actually an expansion pack for the iPhone Red Alert. It’s great that EA included it and a handful of extra skirmish maps that were also previously expansion packs. Each campaign has five missions, each with several objectives that take at least 30 minutes to complete, although occasionally things get a little off track and you’ll spend just as much time building up forces in hopes that brute strength will get you through. This is pretty much a game of kill everything.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert for iPad is literally the iPhone game with a bigger screen and this is a mistake on the developer’s side. The iPad version has been significantly upgraded for the higher definition display but they could have put a lot more into the game, and although this doesn’t detract from the game it is definitely an area where it lacks. On the plus side however, while iPhone gamers had to wait for a multiplayer function, it is there from the get go with the iPad. You can enter skirmish matches with friends over Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi. With a good collection of maps, multiplayer for the iPad version will hold definite appeal.
