Samsung is bringing local flavour to South Africa, introducing a whole host of apps from the local market, including an entertaining app from Touchlab that allows you to star on the front cover of KICK OFF magazine.

The Kick off cover star app is a really simple but effectively entertaining app and the fact that Samsung is supporting local digital developments is a big plus, showcasing what the South African market it is made of. If you’ve heard of KICK OFF magazine, you’ll know that it’s a South African produced magazine, offering some of the latest sports news and developments, featuring some of the greatest local sports stars. The goal if the app is simple: become the cover model.

Once you’ve downloaded the app from Samsung, you’ll see that it offers you an option of using the front camera, rear camera or choosing a photograph from the gallery in your Android smart phone. Once you’ve chosen a picture or snapped one of yourself, family member or friend, you can start putting your creative, magazine skills to the test.

The next step in this entertaining app is to customize the headlines, making up whatever you want. This is really fun and allows you to come up with some quirky and interesting cover lines for your very own, KICK OFF magazine. And while it’s entertaining to play around with the app, I think it works really well if you want to create a birthday message or something special for a friend or family member who enjoys sport, putting your own personalized message and their photograph on the cover of the magazine.

The next step is also very simple. You simply have to crop the image so that it fits to your preference on the magazine’s front cover. You then can see a preview of your cover, ensuring that you like how it has turned out.

The greatest thing about this app for me is that you can then share the cover using a variety of platforms including AllShare, Bluetooth, Email, Gmail, Messaging, Photo Editor, Picasa, Skype, Facebook and WiFi, among others. If you want to use it to create something special for someone, this is a great way to send it to them or share your creations with friends around the world. What’s more is that you’ll be showcasing how great South African apps can be.

You can also save the cover that you have created in a photo album, allowing you go to back and look at the different KICK OFF magazine covers that you have made over time. This is a nice reference point and makes for great entertainment value.

I would give this app a 4-star rating and say kudos to the developers, as well as Samsung for featuring and promoting this app. It’s creative, fun and simple. And who doesn’t dream of being a sports star every now and then?
